Even though the Amiga used stereo, 8-channel sound (4 tracks per stereo channel, IIRC), curiously, the Amiga versions did not include any sound at all apart from the Bard Songs! Yet, the Apple IIGS version included both ambient sounds and combat sounds-along with the harpsichord Bard Songs. Pretty much, the Bard Song instrumentality of the remastered trilogy was adopted from the Amiga versions, as well as the 32-bit color mode of Amiga versions (the Apple version used 16 colors, and there were notable differences between the Amiga versions and the Apple II versions-although the two appeared similar.) Of course the Trilogy uses 32-bit color today. In the Amiga versions of the BT1 and all subsequent Amiga versions-BT2 & 3-the Bard Songs were all done with different instruments-if the Bard carried a harp-the songs played with a harp-if he carried a "horn" (trumpet) the Bard song's played with the sound of Trumpets, if he carried a drum, they played through a drum, a guitar was a guitar, etc. A couple of years ago I grabbed an Apple IIGS emulator and ran BT1 and I noted that the sound, while superior to the speaker beep, of course, was done with a single instrument, the harpsichord. ) Originally, I played the Bard's Tale on a Tandy 1000 (before I started buying Amigas circa 1986/7).and the original audio was the infamous "whistling speaker beep"-my nickname for horrible sound from the DOS machines of the period. Odd how we remember things from ~30 years ago. * Silent areas prevent combat use of bard songs. * Anti-magic dispels light spells, but does not dispel effects from items (so using Ali's Carpet give you levitation that persists in anti-magic zones). For example, MIBL is much less useful in 2 and 3 than in the classic games, as the BT1 version is used for all 3 games. * Spells use the same versions for all 3 games. * DISP and OLAY restore full HP to the target. * Hunters can score critical hits with ranged weapons, and Rogue trap disarming has been streamlined. * In Bard's Tale 3, stats above 18 provide a much bigger benefit than in classic versions. * In Bard's Tale 2, you need to do a lengthy quest, involving actually finding clues in the dungeons, in order to get the Dreamspell plus, you need to be an Archmage to learn it (unlike in the classic games where the requirement was level 7 Sorcerer spells). (This is the change I found to be the most disappointing.) * You can't leave monsters at the Adventurer's Guild, and you can't leave the Guild with a party of just monsters. Here are some of the ones I've encountered: The music is definitely inferior to the Tandy color computer version music on the original I played. You of course can still type in the 4 letter code to choose your spell.Įdit: This game is remade on the apple II version and has updated its music. Now when you cast a spell it brings up a menu of all your spells. You used to have to use the manual and type in a 4 letter code for the spell you wished to cast. Those include like descriptions of the classes when you hover over a class during character creation, indicators how a new piece of equipment will change your stats, etc. There are a couple of changes that cannot be undone. It looks like they made the game so you can check how much vanilla you want and how much streamlined you want. It is not important for the city but it will become very important in the dungeons. I might restart the game as I might uncheck the box for the map. I just don't have the time I had to sit and play. The only option I allowed myself is the ability to save anywhere. Victorchopin: Hmm this release is a bit more "streamlined" compared to its 80s counterparts right? A bit modded for our modern likings or all completely vanilla? Hello, ![]() If you happen to find a Beholder and you are suitably powerful, it may try to negotiate with you, but you should still just plan on fighting it as it really, really wants to eat you. The Beholder is usually found lurking in underground dungeons and is filled with such hate that it will attack you on sight. The Beholder graces us with their presence in the Monster Manual (1977) and they no longer look like an awkward balloon! Instead, they look like a weird insect with plates of chitin and stupid hair. We feel for the DMs of old who had to remember that there was a term used twice in another book and had to scrounge that up whenever they were trying to prepare a balloon with eyeballs to kill off their party in a beautiful TPK. As far as we can tell, beyond the Death Ray save table, that is the only spot in the Original Dungeons & Dragons box set that has anything to do with Death Rays. Luckily, if you opened up the Dungeons & Dragons Boxed Set (1974) and went to the first book, Men & Magic and then stumble upon the Finger of Death spell, it clarifies that it acts like a Death Ray. One of the hardest to locate, we assume for most DMs, was figuring out what a Death Ray did. A couple, however, don’t correspond directly to a spell of the same name, so the DM had to figure out what to do. It’s worth noting a few things about the various abilities the eyes have, most of them are based on the spell by the same name, and finding out what it does is straightforward. In this edition, it can fire off 1d4 eyes per round. It’s unclear what happens if you kill the body first, does the Beholder just drift aimlessly in the air or does it sink to the ground? Either way, we assume its movement drops to zero and hopefully its eyes stop shooting at you.Īs with all the Beholders, it is the eye rays that make the creature so interesting. That big giant eye in the middle of the beholder makes a nice target and their eyes must be just a squishy as ours. We assume this is due to the stalks being made out of the same “material” as the body itself and that due to how small they are, they are harder to hit. The main eye can take up to 20 points of damage and has an Armor Class of 7, while the eyestalks have the lowest amount of sitting at only 10 HP, though they have an Armor Class of 2. The body has the most at 40 HP and an Armor Class of 0. The body, the main eye, and the eyestalks each have their different armor classes and hit points. Going back to the mechanics of the Beholder, it has three components that make up this monster. Now, it truly is a fearsome battle to the death against the Eye Tyrant! Luckily, the White Box set of Dungeons & Dragons was reprinted in 2013 by WotC and while every book stayed the same, each one got new and awesome cover art. Well, maybe not so much action as a fat balloon looking stoned out of its mind and a warrior unsure if the monster is just a prank or if he is about to be killed. It’s of a ferocious fight between a fighter and a beholder and you can really tell that there are action and heroics involved! We are given a single piece of artwork on them and it is the front cover of the supplement and it is pretty badass. They float very slowly and are known to be neutral with a bent towards chaos. They are 3’ diameter, they have one big ugly eye in the middle of its round body, and ten little stalks with eyes atop it. The Beholder makes its debut in the Greyhawk Supplement (1975) where they are also called Eye Tyrants and Spheres of Many Eyes - both monikers are apt titles for the creature. The Beholder has a wealth of information and history behind it, and this is going to be a deep and long look into their history. From the giant Elder Orb, a massive Beholder skilled in the art of arcane magic, to the Doomsphere, an undead beholder created from the energy of powerful explosions to many other strange forms. With over 20 variants of the Beholder throughout the editions, the floating eyeball of doom brings with it a long and storied history. That alone would scare off most reasonable people, and then you find out that the eyes can all shoot rays of various magic at you and your friends, all sane people will flee as quickly as possible. This monster is a floating sphere with a giant eyeball in the center, a mouth full of teeth, and little eyestalks on the top of it. There is no myth or legend that the Beholder is born from and is solely a creation from the minds of these gentlemen, which just makes you wonder how many drugs they were doing. One of the original monsters in Dungeons and Dragons, this creature comes from the minds of the creators of the game, Rob Kuntz and Gary Gygax - though the creature was imagined by Rob’s brother Theron Kuntz, and fleshed out by Gygax. A terrible disease called the Black Death claimed the lives of millions of Europeans in the fourteenth century, so in many places there were not enough peasants to farm the vast estates. The feudal system proved impractical by the end of the Middle Ages. For centuries, a person’s life was all but guaranteed to be exactly like their parents’ lives. A serf who lived on the manor of a Lord was likely the descendant of a peasant who had served the ancestor of that Lord. Lords often forced families to pay a tax when a member of their household died to compensate for the manor’s loss of labor.Īdvertisement There was very little social mobility, or chance to move upward in status during the Middle Ages. Serfs were encouraged to have many children because a small family might not have enough daylight hours to tend their family plot after their work in the Lord’s fields was complete. Serfs were not allowed to marry without permission from the Lord the family of a serf would have to turn over additional crops when someone wanted to marry and leave the manor. In exchange, serfs were required to work a particular number of days on the lord’s personal fields. The Lord provided the serf and his family a safe place to live and land to grow food. When one family stayed in power for a long time, this was called a dynasty.īishop - The Bishop was the top church leader in the kingdom and managed an area called a diocese. Both Memory Saver and Energy Saver will be launched globally over the next few weeks. If Memory Saver and Energy Saver are able to help ameliorate that - and make your battery last longer too - then Google might have gone some way to fixing Chrome’s biggest problem. While Chrome has managed to become the dominant Windows web browser and one of the best browsers for Mac, it has been plagued by poor memory management for years. The changes could turn out to be important. You can disable either Memory Saver or Energy Saver (or both), and mark certain websites as exempt in Chrome’s settings. Google says that when these new features launch, users will still be able to customize them to their liking. When your battery drops to 20%, Chrome will try to prolong your battery life by “limiting background activity and visual effects for websites with animations and videos.”Presumably, this means Chrome will limit the kind of flashy effects that have made a comeback in web design in recent years. The goal of Energy Saver, meanwhile, is fairly self-explanatory - helping your laptop battery last longer - but it does so in a somewhat interesting way. When you need to access the tabs again, they will be reloaded and become active. It does this by freeing up memory from inactive tabs, and putting them to sleep so they can’t monopolize your system’s resources. The changes are set to roll out today with the latest release of Chrome on desktop (version m108).The first new feature, dubbed Memory Saver, is designed to reduce the amount of memory Chrome’s tabs use. Now, Chrome has been updated with two new features that cut down on memory usage and extend your laptop’s battery life, according to Google. That can be a problem if you’re running other resource-heavy tasks and don’t want things to slow down.
